Save Money and Your Self-Respect: Stop Driving

I hate automobiles with the fiery indignation of a thousand supernova suns.

I hate automobiles with the fiery indignation of a thousand supernova suns.

I hate what automobiles are doing to the environment and how they make drivers lazy yet lethal at the same time. I’ve always hated cars in fact, and I refuse to get a driver’s licence. Whenever I tell a typical car driver that, the person’s stunned expression drains of blood to a sickly pale and their bottom lip starts quivering. Then the inevitable question: “But.. but… how do you get around?”

No, they probably don’t stutter, I’m just making fun of them at this point. But that reminds me of the other thing I hate about automobiles - they rob people of imagination and ingenuity and toughness. They forget that for millennia mankind has walked with their own God given legs. People have become so obsessively dependent on these mechanical ozone-killing money suckers it’s scary.

That’s why I think mass transit and bicycles are the way to go (especially since the global consumption of oil outpaces production by a staggering margin), and this Kent Ultra Light Magnesium Compact Folding Bike

Fold up bike

is a perfect marriage of the two forms of transportation. You can easily tote the bike with you on the bus, then unfold it and pedal off to work. And it looks pretty trick too.

You’ll save money, spare the environment, and save your self-respect.

I hate bicyclists on my roadway. I hated them when I rode bikes, it congealed into a cold fury when I drove cab, and now that I own a home, I wish to run them over.

But, here’s a compromise, asshat.

When bike riders are licensed (with the accompanying fee)(so that they can be cited for not obeying the rules of the road for wheeled vehicles as opposed to horses.) regulated (lic. plated with attendant fee), inspected (tire wear and brakes etc), with attendant fee, taxed (excise, annual) road tested with attendant cop (and fee), with license renewal every 5 years (with vision test and attendant fee) I will then be happy to share the roads I pay for with my fees, taxes, and gasoline purchases. Deal?

No deal Shagata. My bike doesn’t kill people and leave a cloud of poisonous fumes in the air. However,  I respect the fact you drove cab and have your own laundry list of issues.

Thank for your comments (sans “asshat”).

I can’t wait for the warmer weather so I can get to the bus by bicycle and save 20 bucks a week in gas,100 bucks a month in subway fees, get in shape, and enjoy the outdoors. To those that complain about cyclists, just like drivers, pedestrians, joggers..there will always be people that are too self-absorbed to worry about cutting people off or running people over or whatever so complain all you want but chances are at some point you’ll be one of THOSE people.

Here I am finding yet another blogger promoting clean living and I just love it! Seems the only people we will have issues with are those making the billions of dollars. I’m an environmentally friendly guy, I recycle, I walk, I bike and I’m buying a hybrid this year! I have a few posts about the environment you might like over at iknownil you should come visit sometime!

Cheers and again great article! Pass on the word and we’ll save or planet before you know it!

Successful Entrepreneurs are Stuntmen

Steve Shu’s entry about cockroaches got me thinking about the flip side of being resourceful and resilient — failure. It’s a shame that failure and mistakes have such a negative connotation, because they are both precursors to personal evolution and success.
Failure is as a necessary part of entrepreneurship. It’s a skill to master. The mythology of […]
