Just as bitter winter temperatures mellow into spring, then into the dog days of summer, a firm’s annual hiring changes from hot to cold and back to hot again. Understanding an industry’s recruiting rhythm might give you a distinctive advantage. Here are what I call the four seasons of job hiring.

Winter of Discontent - If you’re skilled, employed but feeling undervalued, January and February are peak hiring periods where the need for talent is often high and the pool of qualified candidates is shallow. Unfortunately, retail and manufacturing firms typically lay off employees after the holidays, so you may want to look at other industries and other options.

Spring into Seasonal Work - Building and construction firms will do a big chunk of their recruiting in the spring and early summer months, according to Job Openings and Labour Turnover Survey (JOLTS). Spring is also a good time to be nailing down a job in the Tourism and hospitality industry.

Summer Hiring Heats Up - Hiring in the manufacturing industry typically ratchets up in the late summer months of August and September, when increased production is needed for the Christmas season. Companies also build an access inventory during this period because of employee holidays, in which the manufacturing facilities must shut down.

Recruiting Falls in Autumn - By the time the leafs on the trees brighten with colour, most companies have finished any personnel acquisitions for the calendar year. But not so for the employers in the retail sector, whose may still be scrambling to get part and full time employees to tend their mall outlets and service frantic shoppers.
